Tips for Communicating

Here are some tips for communicating with someone with a hearing loss:

  1. Speak up, but do not shout.
  2. Speak slowly and clearly — don’t overemphasize.
  3. Rephrase rather than repeat a misunderstood sentence.
  4. Cut out background noise by moving away or turning off the TV or radio.
  5. Face the person in good light.
  6. Do not obscure your mouth with your hand or cigarette, and avoid chewing gum when you speak.
  7. Ask the person what can be done to make communication easier.
